Boswell lone survivor

- Squash Australia

Canberra’s Stewart Boswell became the only Australian to make it through to the second round of the CIMB Malaysian Open squash tournament in Kuala Lumpur after a night of upsets and near misses on Wednesday.
Third seeded Boswell saw off fellow Australian Aaron Frankcomb in three games 11-9, 11-8, 11-4 and will now play classy Egyptian Tarek Momen, who Boswell beat in the semi-finals of last year’s Australian Open.
However, fellow Australian Cameron Pilley crashed out of the tournament following a straight games loss to Pakistani qualifier Farhan Mehboob 13-11, 14-12, 11-8.
Pilley was playing his first tournament following the PSA tour’s end of season break and he was disgusted with his efforts in bowing out at such an early stage.
“To say that was an average performance would be giving me credit,” was all the 27-year-old would say afterwards.
Qualifier Ryan Cuskelly showed his recent improvement as he pushed sixth seeded Pakistani Aamir Atlas Khan to four games before losing 8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10 in 65 minutes, but it seems only a matter of time before the 22-year-old Cuskelly claims a major scalp.
There was also a major upset in the women’s tournament as third seed Rachael Grinham looked rusty in her four-game loss to Egyptian qualifier Raneem El Weleily.
Grinham had her chances, with three of the four games going to tiebreaks, but El Weleily was more composed to win 12-10, 14-16, 11-9, 12-10,
Earlier Kasey Brown pushed fifth seeded Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy all the way before the Egyptian won 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 11-3.
