In-form Queenslander Lisa Camilleri is confident of making it seven Women’s International Squash Players Association (WISPA) titles in a row when she lines up for The Rock Building Society Queensland Open in Rockhampton this weekend.
Camilleri has been in superb form on the 2010 Australian Squash Tour, bagging titles in Darwin, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney to take her overall tally to 12.
Fresh from hearing about her selection in the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Camilleri said she was confident of making it eight from eight this weekend.
“I’m feeling really good,” Camilleri said.
“I’ve been doing some great training and I’ve had a week off so I feel a lot fresher than at the other tournaments.”
World number 39 Camilleri has beaten all her main rivals this week during her golden run and she said she would have to be careful not to become complacent.
“The key is to keep my focus and hopefully I will get the results. I think since hearing about my Australian selection I am a lot more relaxed, but I am determined to do well.”
The second seeded Camilleri opens her campaign against the Sunshine Coast’s Grace McErvale, before a probable quarter-final against Australian teammate Melody Francis of Melbourne.
She would then likely face New Zealand’s Kylie Lindsay, who pushed her to five games in the final of the South Australian Open, in the semi-finals.
The top half of the draw features top seed Sharon Wee of Malaysia, who faces rising Australian star Tamika Saxby of Coffs Harbour in her first match.
Korean Song Sun Mi is also in the top half of the draw, as is experienced Victorian Amelia Pittock.
The men’s draw is headed by Innisfail’s Steve Finitsis, the world number 70 who is returning to Australia from his training base in Holland to try and win his first Queensland Open.
Finitsis has an opening round bye before a probable clash with Switzerland’s Jonas Daehler.
Second seed Rasmus Nielsen of Denmark also has a bye ahead of a second round match against either New Zealander James Skiffington of Stephen London of England.
Matches begin at the Scotvale Park Squash Centre on Friday at 5pm.
Second round and quarter-finals are on Saturday, with the semis and the final on Sunday.
The men’s final begins at 2.40 and the women’s at 3.45.
