Australia to play for fifth at U21 World Cup

-

Australia shrugged off their loss against India the night before to put in a gritty performance to beat Malaysia 3-0 at the Indian Squash Academy.

Rod Eyles reports from Chennai:

Jamie McErvale prevailed in a close match against a very swift moving Affeeq Abedeen. I think this was a real breakthrough for Jamie today to back up after a  tough match last night against India and put in a performance like he did today. He was patient and certainly took last night’s experience into his match today and used it to his advantage.
It certainly set the platform for Australia as the second rubber was always going to be a tough one for Cardwell had never beaten the Malaysian before. Cardwell had a look of determination that was inspirational as she swept through the first game. However the second and third were a different story. Tan Yan Xin had a patch of brilliance in the second but the street fighter Cardwell wasn't buying into it. Sticking to her game plan of attacking length was working well and a series of backhand crosscourt flicks in the third which wrong footed the Malaysian girl three times.
A very happy Cardwell looked like she wanted to go on for more which is a great sign for Australia tomorrow going into the 5th and 6th playoff against Hong Kong

Jamie McErvale won against Affeel Abedeen 9-11,11-9.11-5,13-11
Sarah Cardwell won against Xin Yan Tan 11-6,12-10,11-9.
Walter Koteka won the best of three rubber against Sanjay Singh 6-11,12-10,11-9
