NSW Squash Rankings Policy Overview  

NSW Squash ranks players across gender and age categories from 13 years to open. Rankings are performed four times each year by State selectors effective the 1st of January, April, July and October. They are published the following month on each occasion on this website and also forwarded to Squash Australia for National Rankings.


Information is collected from a variety of sources and players are directed to the selection criteria below (Seniors and Juniors criteria). This can be further supported by any individual player submitting their competition results by completing  a Player Tournament Result Form (see below) and submitting to NSW Squash for consideration. Once the Rankings are published players are entitled to appeal the rankings by completing the Ranking Appeal Form (see below)

SELECTION CRITERIA  

The State Selectors shall strictly adhere to the following criteria and procedure when determining the ranking. They shall   consider the following factors:

  • Must be a financial Member (Player Membership) of NSW Squash
  • Or if a travelling professional (PSA/WISPA/AIS) must have been born in NSW.
  • Players not born in NSW but have been resident for no less than 4 months may be eligible to be ranked.
  • Current and previous State and National rankings shall be taken into consideration.
  • When determining new State rankings, the Selectors will take the existing State rankings and the previous state rankings into consideration for all relevant groups - i.e. the last two rankings. A heavier weighting shall be given to the existing ranking than to the previous one.
  • Major competition results since last ranking.

    Rankings are utilized in part to select State Teams/Squads and seed State and Regional events.

    APPEALS PROCEDURE (SENIORS AND JUNIORS)

    An appeal will only be considered if it is lodged within 7 days of the ranking list being issued on the NSW Squash Website.
    An appeal must be lodged with NSW Squash
    An appeal may be lodged by a player or by a representative of the players authorised by the player or his/her parent or guardian. An appeal lodged by anyone else will not be accepted.

    An appeal that is submitted on the official Ranking Appeal Form within the required time will be examined by NSW Squash and subject to meeting the requirements of this policy, the Appeal Form will be forwarded to the appropriate Selection Committee for consideration.  

    The Selection Committee is required to consider all appeals objectively, fairly and thoroughly. It shall review all information that was received or held by NSW Squash at the time such information was forwarded to the Selection Committee/s. Information not held by NSW Squash at this time shall not be considered in the appeal.

    The Selection Committee shall inform NSW Squash, in writing of the outcome of the appeal and provide a brief report explaining the committee's decision. This report will not be forwarded to the appellant.

    The appellant will be notified in writing of the appeal outcome by NSW Squash. Neither the Selection Committee nor NSW Squash shall be required to provide a detailed explanation or justification of the decision.

     

    SENIORS RANKING POLICY EFFECTIVE 2010
    The Senior Selectors shall consider the head to head match results of the following competitions:

    NSW Squash Open sanctioned tournaments

    Sydney Pennant Competition. (MATRIX results)

    Events sanctioned by a member Association such as Squash Australia, PSA and WISPA if the appropriate notice to NSW Squash has been followed.

    Responsibility for forwarding results to NSW Squash lies with the Players themselves.


  •  Player Tournament Result Form


    The NSW Squash Office verifies the result, and records the result to the MATRIX.

    Selectors will rank players based on information captured via the MATRIX, which includes Premier Pennant Results and verified results received from the Member Associations events.

     

    SENIOR RANKINGS issued 1st January, 1st April, 1st July and 1st October.
    Top 20 ranked.  Seeding Events
    Seeding for all events should be based on the most recent rankings available (i.e. PSA, WISPA, National Rankings for all overseas and interstate players. The most recent ranking lists are available at any time to tournament hosts for seeding events from NSW Squash.


Junior Ranking Policy Effective 2015

Junior Rankings will be published on the NSW Website on 4 occasions throughout the year.

(1st March, 1st May, 1st September, 1st November)

To be eligible for a NSW STATE JUNIOR RANKING a player must be:

  •  A Financial Member of the NSW Squash Association
  • A Member of the NSW State Junior Academy or Regional Squad
  • Actively competing in sanctioned tournaments as listed on the NSW Tournament Calendar and which form part of the Squash Australia Junior Tour.
  • All players entering Platinum, Gold, Silver AJST Tournaments must be registered and a member of the State Association. The Bronze category offers a lesser number of ranking points and is generally conducted on a centre/club basis. Bronze tournaments are seen as the initial entry and encouragement level for junior development and progression in the sport.

The Junior State Selectors will consider all results from sanctioned events and where there is no head to head result, regional and development events (Bronze) will be taken into calculation.

Recording of Results

Tournament Promoters and Squash Centres conducting sanctioned tournaments MUST submit a copy of the draw and results to NSW Squash within seven days (7) of conducting the event.

 NSW Squash requires the results to meet the following deadlines.

  • Compiling State Age Group Rankings.
  • Provide results to the State Junior Selectors for evaluation
  • Forward results to Squash Australia 20th of each month for inclusion in the AJST Participation Rankings. Those results not received within the due timeframe will be carried over until the following month.
  • NSW Squash will continue to maintain existing ranking system in alignment with the new Squash Australia Tour Points system being trialled in 2015.
  • A player can only be ranked in their current age group.
  • Timed events will not be taken into consideration.
  • Small draw events – 4 players or less receive half ranking points. Tournament hosts are encouraged to increase participation numbers in any event to maximise opportunities and points.

NSW Squash will list eligible junior members in their correct age group, commencing from Under 11 Boys and Girls. A maximum of 16 players can be listed in any age group but results will be maintained for all participants. A player not listed in an age group who performs above those listed in the current rankings for any age group will be recognised and included in the next published state ranking list.

If a player does not participate in any sanctioned tournaments for two quarters (six months) they will be removed from the State Ranking List published and the NSW website (Junior Rankings).

NSW STATE JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE SELECTIONS

To be eligible for State Junior Team Selection a player must be:

  • A Financial Member of the NSW Squash Association
  • A Member of the NSW State Junior Academy or Regional Squad and participated in one Academy Development Camp (1) prior to the State Age Championships each year.
  • Actively competing in NSW State Junior Academy programs as conducted in NSW regions.
  • Actively competing in sanctioned tournaments as listed on the NSW Tournament Calendar and which form part of the Squash Australia Junior Tour.

There are four categories of tournaments:

  •  Bronze – Unlimited . These events are to encourage participation and development at junior levels.
  • Silver- Two Tournaments. Each State is allotted 4 Silver Tournaments each year. There are four (4) Silver events conducted in 4 regions across NSW. Players should compete in at least two Silver events (2) to be eligible for State Team Selections.
  • Gold - NSW State Age Championships (Compulsory for State Team Selection) in July.
  • Platinum – National class events including the Australian Junior Open and Australian Age Championships each year.

Additional Information:

 Details of Silver Events are available on the NSW Tournament Calendar and the NSW Squash website.  Silver Events are held in Sydney, Western, North Coast and Hunter Regions.

Silver events offer higher ranking points as part of the Australian Junior Squash Tour and provide:

  • Strong level of competition in each age group
  • Opportunity for head to head matches/results
  • Reduction of financial cost to families for Accommodation and Travel expenses
  • Identify player potential and participation in NSW Academy Talent and Development programs
  • Support NSW Squash Underpinning program for financial support from Squash Australia.
  • Contribute to a players best results for State and National Ranking systems.

Gold – State Age Championships – (compulsory for State Team Selection)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

AVAILABILITY FOR STATE TEAM SELECTIONS

As at the 1st May each year, players on the NSW Squash Junior Ranking List will be circulated with a notice advising them that they must confirm with the NSW Squash Administrator by MAY 17, if they are available/not available for selection in the State Junior Team to attend the Australian Age Championships.

NSW Squash will then publish a list of available players, so that all players on the state ranking list are aware well in advance of their potential State Team opportunities.

Players seeking selection in an Age Group must compete in that Age Group at the State Junior Championships. This provides all players an equal opportunity to compete and perform to their best ability in that age group. Final placing’s are taken into consideration for State Representative Team’s  provided a player meets all the selection criteria for that age group and they have submitted their EOI/availability to the State Junior Selectors in May.

Exemption: A player representing their country at a national or international event at the time of the State Age Championships.

Exemption can be supported by production of a Letter from School, Medical Practitioner or Squash Australia which must be in the hands of the State Junior Selectors prior to the State Championships.

Medical Certificate:

A Medical Certificate should be provided in the case of injury/illness that prevents participation in State Junior Age Championships which must be in the hands of the State Junior Selectors before commencement date of competition.

JUNIOR RANKING APPEALS

An appeal will only be considered if lodged within 7 days of the Ranking List being published on the NSW Squash Website.
