The Power of Sport Psychology for Performance

How often do you find yourself distracted by your thoughts and emotions during a match? Do you tend to dwell on mistakes and find it difficult to refocus? How often do you get caught up in what your opponent is doing rather than focusing on yourself? Do you crack under pressure or place high expectations on yourself to perform? These are just some of the many factors that can affect an athlete’s performance and can be explored through the role of sport psychology.

Sport psychology plays a powerful role in high-performance sport. In particular, it assists athletes to build psychological skills that allow an athlete to flourish and thrive in a high-pressure environment in order to reach their ultimate potential. The key to reaching and maintaining that potential is through the mind.

The power of the mind is often what separates the good from the best and the champions from the rest. Most elite athletes consider their performance to be 75-90% mental attributing success as “mind over matter.” Whilst the physical components of performance are important, the mind is what gives athletes a competitive advantage over their opposition.

In order for athletes to build these skills, it is important for sporting organisations to create a culture that promotes the development of their athletes based on strong individual and team values. At Squash Australia, we are building a strong values based culture to create an environment that will allow our athletes to reach their performance potential, and thrive as both players and people.
